Winsor Pilates: Is it Worth the Hype?

by Diana Bocco June 23, 2005

What is Pilates?

Pilates was developed by German-American Joseph Pilates almost a century ago, as a method he called The Art of Contrology, or “how to use the mind to control the muscles.” According to Wikipedia, “Instead of performing many repetitions of each exercise, Joseph H. Pilates preferred fewer, more precise movements, requiring proper control and form. He designed more than 500 specific exercises. The most frequent form, called matwork, involves a series of calisthenic motions performed without weight or apparatus on a padded mat.”

How is Winsor Pilates Different?

Winsor Pilates ®, developed by Mari Winsor, is a complete set of exercises using what’s known as dynamic sequencing technique, movements that are organized in an easy-to-follow cycle for maximum results. Winsor Pilates ® does not require any equipment. Winsor also differs in the fact that all exercises work with your "powerhouse," or core muscle groups (abdominal, back and buttocks regions), optimizing results, and improving posture and stamina.

Weight Loss

Pilates is not an aerobic method and will not necessarily help you lose weight. The method helps tone and define muscles, increases flexibility, and develops a lean, sculpted body, known as the “dancer’s look.” Aerobic exercises such as walking are recommended in the program for those trying to lose weight.

Who Can Do It? Who Can’t?

Winsor Pilates ® is not recommended for pregnant women in the latter stages, and people more than 30 pounds overweight may have a hard time with some of the exercises. Beyond that, anybody can benefit from Pilates. Pilates is being used for rehabilitation in centers around the country.

Verdict

A sound program that delivers.
