Bartending at Home: Seven Essential Tools

by J. Steinhoff June 24, 2005

Want to mix it up at your next gathering? Upgrade your home bar from a wine and beer cabinet to a cocktail paradise. Here are the tools you need to get it started.

1. Double Jigger

One secret to good bartending is measuring precisely. In a home bar, the double jigger is your most essential measurement tool. One side holds one ounce, the other two ounces.

2. Barspoon

This multipurpose tool has a long handle and a flat end. It can be used for measuring smaller quantities of liquor, stirring mixed drinks, and "muddling," the process of flavoring a drink by crushing ingredients such as fruit and flavorings in the bottom of a glass.

3. Shaker

This tool puts the "mix" in "mixed drink." Shakers come in two varieties: Boston and three-piece. The Boston has two pieces, a mixing glass and a can, while the three-piece consists of a can, strainer, and lid.

4. Strainer

Most mixed drinks taste crispest when strained over a glass of fresh ice. Choose either a stainless steel Julep strainer that sits directly inside the glass or a mesh strainer that fits directly over the opening of your shaker.

5. Tongs

Nothing looks less appealing—or less hygienic—than handling ice with your hands. Consider investing in a stainless steel tong and ice container set, which is easy to clean and will prevent your ice from melting.

6. Blender

This is essential for creating drinks made with crushed ice and fresh fruit, such as margaritas.

7. Straws

Straws are a must-have for any beginning bartender. They allow you to test the taste and strength of your concoctions without sharing your germs. Here’s how: Place a straw in your creation, place a finger over the top to stop the airflow, then remove the straw from the drink. Taste the liquid in the straw to determine if the drink is balanced and properly sweetened.

With these tools, and a little practice, you’ll be your way to bartending like a pro.
