Online traffic schools work basically the same way as traditional ones: You take a course and then pass a test.
Procedure
Text and online books (sometimes e-books you have to download), videos, animations, and illustrations provide all necessary information for you to be able to pass the final test. After completion, you (or the court of your choice) will receive a hard copy certificate.
Applicants
Anybody who needs courses for ticket or points dismissal (or to avoid the points to appear on the record), and insurance premiums reduction can take an online course. It’s also ideal for those who need a driver safety course as part of their work requirements.
Length and Use
Usually 4-5 hours, to be taken at once, troughout the day, or over the course of several days. An automatic feature in the websites tracks and saves your progress, so every time you log on, you are taken to the place where you last were. There’s usually no limit as to how many times you can log on and off. Courses are available online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Final Exam
A multiple-choice test is administered at the end of the course. Normally, a 70% to 80% percentage of the questions must be answered correctly for you to pass the test. If you fail, most schools will allow you to retake the test for no extra fee.
Costs
Depending on the school, you are looking at anything from $15 to $50. Some schools offer a flat fee, while others charge according to offense (is the certificate for ticket dismissal or insurance reduction?). Many schools charge a different price according to state and even city. For example, the Traffic School Online charges only $14.50 for courses recognized in Los Angeles, but $29.99 for the Nevada ones. Virginia-approved courses cost $40. You should also check that the court that issued your ticket accepts online courses. School will usually have a list posted on their websites. Some schools will let you take the course for free and only charge you when you are ready to take the exam.
