Safely Viewing Wildlife

by Sarah McGuire July 19, 2005

Before you Depart

Wildlife viewing can be an exciting and rewarding experience. However, if this activity is not pursued properly, it can also be a dangerous or damaging one. There are some basic tips that any wildlife viewer should follow in order to ensure his personal safety and prevent harming the wildlife or its' environment.

Preparation

First, viewers should always be prepared for their adventure and dress appropriately. Knowing what to bring and wear contributes to a pleasant viewing experience. Items like water, appropriate footwear, bug repellent, and sunscreen, aid in keeping you at your peak performance. Knowledge of the wildlife and wildlife areas will also aid in planning and viewing. Before departing, don’t forget to let someone know your destination and when to expect your return. This way, help can find you if anything unexpected, such as getting lost or injured, occurs.

At your Destination

After careful planning and preparation, you have arrived at your destination. Now what?

Observation

When you arrive at your destination, using common sense and observing posted rules will contribute to your safety and protect the environment. For example, never leave food or drink where it can attract the wildlife’s interest. This food could be unhealthy for the animal, and it could also cause them to close the distance between you to one that is unsafe. A safe distance from the wildlife you are viewing needs to be maintained at all times. This will allow you to observe wildlife without disturbing their habitat or risking your safety. Whether viewing birds or bears, every wildlife watcher should follow these tips.
