Reducing the Stress in Your Life

by LEXA W LEE July 20, 2005

 Manage Your Time

  • Make a schedule and stick to it. Much of modern-day stress has more to do with an inability to manage time well, rather than having no time.
  • Eat regular meals at regular times. Don’t skip meals. Make a habit of sitting down to eat, instead of doing it on the run. Dieters, note: The latest findings show that people who rush through meals are less able to notice that they are full.
  • Exercise regularly. Stop making excuses. It’s much easier if you find something you like to do often. Make sure you schedule it into your day. Whether you do it solo at home, go for a walk outside, or join a class at a gym, exercise helps regulate your circulation, metabolism, energy, and weight. Physical activity also helps relax tense muscles.
  • Get enough sleep. Yes, some people feel fine after only 5 hours of sleep, but most of us need more. Your body repairs itself when you sleep; for example, this is when your bones lay down calcium. Also, your conscious mind uses the time to recover from the previous day’s activities.

Say No to More

If you constantly find your schedule overloaded, it’s time to pare it down. What are you doing that you don’t really have to do? Many people are unable to “just say no” when they are asked to do things that are not so important. Knowing when to draw the line and say “no” is an important skill to learn. Practice in front of a mirror if you have to. It’s easier than you think. Think of it as a prescription.
