by Allen Butler July 25, 2005

Truck driving can make an excellent career. But how does one get into it, and how does one find jobs? Truck driving schools are an excellent way to both get into the field and help you begin your career, but there are other ways to go about it as well.

Why be a Truck Driver?

Looking for a career that offers excitement, new experiences as well as offer you a decent living? Truck driving might just be the choice for you.

Most new truck drivers make $30,000 in their first year or even more, and this number goes up quickly as a truck driver progresses. Those who own and operate their own trucks can make as much as $100,000 a year or more.

Truck driving is also an excellent way to see new places and explore the country. While most truckers aren't home too much, if you long for the thrill of the open road truck driving can be an excellent career choice for you.

Truck driving companies are always in need of new truck drivers. 75% of all commodities in the United States get to where they need to be by truck. It is by far the most common mode of commercial transport of goods, and that requires a lot of truck drivers. A career in truck driving not only earns you a lot of money, but it is also a secure career. Companies will always require the services of truck drivers.

Requirements for Truck Driving Jobs

In order to qualify to be a truck driver, there are some requirements which you must meet:

  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A
  • Most companies will require clean driving record
  • At least 20/40 vision in each eye, with or without glasses or contact lenses, 70 degree field of vision.
  • Depending on the state, age may be a factor. For local trucking, 18 and older can often apply. For interstate driving, you must be at least 21 and oftentimes companies will require you to be 25.

Companies might also place other requirements for hiring, but these are the basic guidelines based upon state and federal laws.
