Hunting Ranches/Canned Hunting

by Sandra Bell July 26, 2005

What is a hunting ranch?

A hunting ranch is a place to hunt for animals that are within fenced boundaries with acreage from 100 to about 5,000 acres. Some ranches have luxury lodges and gourmet food while others offer only primitive camping. There are basic fees for staying on the ranch and for guides. Most, but not all, charge an additional fee for each animal the hunter kills and fees can range from $50 for a wild hog to $20,000 for an African lion.

What animals are hunted?

Both domestic animals and exotics from Africa are offered. Lions, tigers, elephants, and rhinoceroses are very, very rare and may not be found at all. Following are some of the animals that can be hunted.

  • Aoudad (Barbary sheep)
  • Blackbuck antelope
  • Corsican sheep
  • Mouflon sheep
  • Addax
  • Oryx
  • Eland
  • Gemsbok
  • Water buck
  • Wildebeest
  • mountain lion (cougar)
  • bear

What is on line hunting?

Online.com offers hunting from the Internet. You control camera and gun angles which are rigged up at a real ranch with real game. A click of the mouse shoots the gun. Online says this is especially useful for hunters with disabilities.

What are the advantages of hunting ranches?

You have a very good chance of bagging game and a chance to kill an exotic animal. These ranches also benefit the elderly and those with disabilities because the animals are driven right to you. Ranch hunting is supported by the National Rifle Association and Safari Club International.

What is canned hunting?

Those who are opposed to hunting ranches call this type of sport "canned hunting.” They are attempting to have the practice banned and have succeeded in getting Texas to ban hunting of bears, lions, elephants, and rhinoceroses. Other states which have banned or restricted ranch hunting are:

  • California
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Wisconsin

The definition of canned hunting is hunting that takes place on private property in a fenced in area where the animals can't escape. Many animals are so tame that they don't run when approached by humans. Many hunters are opposed to this type of hunting, believing that it is not sportsmanlike.
