How to Unclog The Bathtub Drain

by Emma Zerner July 28, 2005

Water take a half an hour to go down the drain after the faucet has been turned off?  Standing in water while you are taking a shower, slowly collecting up to your knees? Here are some tips to follow, in order to ensure that your bathtub is in good working order, and the drain is always with the flow.

The Drain: What Kind Do You Have?

First, it is important to see how the strainer cover is attached to the drain. Most can be removed with screw drivers easily, if applicable. If you have the pop-up system, meaning your drain has a drop-in stopper (the plastic top that usually has a metal ring on the top and can easily be removed), remove the stopper, and look down the drain to see if you can detect what has caused it to clog. Sometimes it is good to use a flash light, in order to detect the location of the clog, if it isn't caught around the rim of the drain. There is also the plunger system. Try turning the top of the drain slightly, while lifting gently, in order to be able to access the drain and clog.  The clog may be a result of the stopper being set unevenly. It may need to be lifted from the drain slightly, so more water can pass through.
