Do You Want a Corvette with 4 Doors but without Breaking Your Bank Account?!

by Michael Lerman July 28, 2005

Do you want the performance of the Chevrolet, Corvette?  Do you have a family and need space for you children and a nice trunk for those groceries?  Is Corvette too expensive for you?  If you have answered yes to all of those questions, you probably think you are doomed to have a family sedan or a van and dreading it.  Don’t worry!  Help is on the way!  Today I will introduce you to 2 automobiles that combine blistering performance, comfort and safety of a family sedan, and will not break your bank account!  The cars I’m talking about are Evolution VIII from Mitsubishi and WRX STI from Subaru.

Comfort and Usability

Both, the Evolution VIII and WRX STI, are 4 door sedans that seat up to 5 adults.  Trunks on both cars are plenty to do a good size shopping.  Evolution’s trunk is 10.2 cubic feet.  The trunk of WRX is slightly larger at 11.0 cubic feet.  Both cars have modern comfort features, such as air conditioner, power locks and windows, stereo sound system, and many others.  Each car is customizable with optional comfort/luxury packages.

Safety

Both vehicles comply with standards of safety.  Driver and passenger airbags are present.  Antilock braking systems are standard.  Evolution and STI also come with one invaluable safety feature that most other cars do not possess, all wheel drive system.  All wheel drive simply means that all 4 wheels of the car are spinning simultaneously.  Whether in snow or rain, it is very hard to lose traction.  You will always have a sure grip of the road in any condition.

Performance

The Evolution and the STI (the infamous street names) were designed to deliver heart-stopping performance.  Both cars are available only with manual, short-throw transmissions, because that is what needed to take advantage of their high powered, 4 cylinder engines.  Evolution VIII horsepower is rated at 276.  WRX STI horsepower is rated at 300.  How can 4 cylinder engines produce that much power?  The reason is that the engines are turbocharged.  Turbocharging is forcing much more air into an engine; therefore, developing very, very high amounts of power in small engines, safely and reliably.  The handling of Evolution and STI is almost impeccable.  Taking turns in high speeds is not daunting or clumsy.  It feels as if you were riding on rails.  In other words, if you choose to take either of these cars to track (for a weakened fun), very, very few cars in this world will be able to compete with you.  Both cars are capable of 0-60 mph in just 5 seconds!  Not bad for a family sedan, huh?
