Tips on Safely Sharing a Bed with Infant

by Valencia P. Higuera August 04, 2005

Although baby experts and doctors recommend newborn sleeping in their own cribs and bassinettes as opposed to the parent's bed, many mothers discover that parting with their newborn at night is more difficult than expected. However, there are some tips that will ensure that babies enjoy a safe night's sleep when bunking with mom and dad.

Avoid Falls

  • Parents should push the bed as close to the wall as possible. Despite slim chances, it is possible for babies to fall off the bed during the night. This is more common when babies share the bed with only one parent.

Remove Heavy Objects

  • It would be wise for parents to remove heavy comforters, pillows, quilts, and so forth. These bed items could accidentally cover the baby's face during the night causing suffocation.

Guard Rails

  • Although an extreme measure, some parents who permanently bunk with their babies and toddlers may consider installing a removable guard rail. This way, the child will not roll off the bed when re-positioning their self during the night.
