Creole Soul Chicken? Fried Fish Sticks? Cajun Fried Shrimp? Buffalo Barbecue Wings? This is soul food with a twist. All dishes except two (which contain cheese) are vegan. The restaurant offers unique meals made with mostly organic soy and gluten. Authentic Caribbean and Creole recipes have been adapted to cater to vegetarian and meat-eaters alike. Red Bamboo offers what may be the best chocolate covered strawberry shortcake in town. And yes, it's made with no eggs and no butter. Who would've thought it?
Red Bamboo is located at 140 West 4th Street.
Gobo
A stylish space, an open kitchen, and mood lightning make Gobo a favorite among couples. Completely vegan with an Asian touch, the dishes are sophisticated and finely presented. Try the green-tea noodles, served with a veggie Bolognese sauce, or the Grilled Shiitake mushrooms, meaty enough to satisfy even hard-core carnivores. Splurge in an organic wine for a complete experience.
Gobo is located at 401 Avenue of the Americas
Hangawi
No shoes, no windows, no chairs. Hangawi is a doorway to another time, complete with sunken tables, candle lightning, and Zen music. Although the dishes are based on mountain roots, grains, and green, don't let that scare you. The chefs are master artists and the flavors are truly heavenly. Yoko Ono and Gwyneth Paltrow are regulars here, and so are many other Hollywood stars following a raw or macrobiotic diet.
