How to Raise Twins without Going Broke

by Valencia P. Higuera August 12, 2005

Those who are raising children know the importance of establishing a budget. Children are expensive – no one will deny this. In addition, the more children a couple have, the more money it takes to feed and clothe them. Couples who are expecting their first child may have arranged their expenses to accommodate a baby. However, couples who learn that they are expecting twins may experience of wave of panic. Two babies mean double of everything, which cancels out a seemingly perfect budget. Nonetheless, there are practical tips that parents may adopt to lessen the expense of caring for two newborns.

Avoid Buying Two of Everything

  • Understandably, parents who have twins enjoy dressing the babies in matching clothes. However, buying two of every outfit may quickly become a financial burden. Instead of matching outfits, parents should allow the babies to share clothing. Thus, it will be as if they were shopping for only one baby. Additionally, parents should consider only purchasing one swing, playpen, bouncer, and let the babies alternate. Of course, babies will need their own car seat and crib.

Breastfeed

  • Infant formula is costly. One baby may use a large canister a week. These canisters cost around $30. That’s $60 a week, which adds up to $240 a month to provide milk. Mothers should consider breastfeeding to save money. Because breastfeeding may become painful, mothers may try pumping their milk into a bottle for feedings.

Discount Clubs

  • Instead of shopping at pricey grocery stores, parents should make a beeline to discount super centers and wholesale clubs. Buying in bulk saves money in the long run, and the low prices allow parents to purchase more items.

Daycare Discounts

  • Childcare is expensive. However, some facilities are willingly to offer a discount for twins. Prior to choosing a daycare center, parents should inquire as to whether they offer a “twin’s discount.”
