Tips to Soothe your Fussy Baby

by Jasalynn Krissieanna September 07, 2005

Babies are very precious, but there are times when they can become very fussy and cry a lot.

So you've fed them, changed their diaper, and burped them. What else could you do?

Here are some things you can try to help soothe your baby.

  •  Introduce your baby to a pacifier. Some babies at first won't take them, but keep trying. Try the nipple like pacifiers. Babies tend to like them more.
  • Try rocking your baby. Hold your baby close to you and rock at a steady rhythm.
  • Humming or singing softly to your baby can help. Hearing your soft voice will sooth him or her.
  • Wrap your infant in a blanket. Infants sometimes like to be wrapped in a blanket to feel that security.
  • Lay your baby across your knees and softly rub their back. You can also lay a pillow on your lap and then lay the baby across the pillow. Also move your knees side to side slowly. This will also help if the baby has a tummy ache.
  • Try playing a musical toy for your baby. The sound of the music may also help sooth the baby.
  • While rocking your baby, slowly and softly rub your baby's head or back.
  • Lay your babies head on your shoulder close to your neck. The feel of your skin on your baby can also help.
  • Try putting your baby in a swing. Some babies like the rhythm of swings.
  • Wind up the mobile in the babies crib so they can watch it go around and hear the music.

Some babies are not easy to soothe. Some people say if they cry that they are either wet, hungry, or sleepy. That's not always true.

Sometimes babies just want to feel the security. They want to feel safe and secure. Each baby is different and it's not always easy to soothe fussy babies. Just remember to have patience. Babies can't tell you what they want and it's a big adjustment from being in your womb and being in the real world.
