Soft candlelight is considered romantic. Judging from many movies, television programs, and soap operas, candles can set the scene for a sensual bath, bedroom encounter, or just invoke a mood. Candles come in many shapes, sizes, and scents. They play a role in many religious celebrations, are found on birthday cakes, and are often used to bring a favorite fragrance into the home. It is vital to remember, however, that candles can be dangerous.
Basic Candle Safety
Tiny tapers lined up on a birthday cake are relatively safe because they are soon extinguished. Even with birthday candles, however, make sure that the flames are out before discarding. A smoldering candle can ignite a wastepaper basket into flame.
40% of all candle caused fires begin in the bedroom. Never leave a candle in any room unattended and never fall asleep with a lit candle. The safest is never to burn candles in the bedroom where you are most likely to fall asleep. Never use lit candles in a child's room or in a camper or tent. Make sure every candle flame is extinguished before leaving the room or your home.
Never rely on candles in a power outage. Opt for battery operated flashlights instead.
If you must use candles for light or romance, follow these safety precautions:
Keep lit candles at least one foot (twelve inches) away from flammable materials like curtains, mattresses, and furniture.
Always place a candle on a clear, uncluttered surface and preferably on something that is not flammable, such as a metal tray or ceramic dish.
Use candle holders that will not tip over and spill burning wax.
Put candles out when they burn down almost to the holder.
