How to Make the Most Out of Small Living Spaces

by Laurie June 21, 2005

Use these simple techniques to use the space in a small home efficiently.

Not everyone can afford a castle. Many people live in homes that simply are not as big as they would like. Whether you live alone in a small apartment or are trying to squeeze your family into a tiny house, you need to know how to make the most of the space you have. End the claustrophobia and start redecorating.

Maximize the Space You Have

Try to use space as efficiently as possible. For example, if you have two kids sharing a room, you can get a bunk bed. Or, if you only have one child in a room, you might get a kids combination bed and desk; these well designed pieces are set up like a bunk bed except that the lower bed is replaced with a desk and small play area.

Similar space saving furniture can be used in other parts of the home as well. Look for expandable dining tables that take up minimal space but can be enlarged when guests come over. Make sure to buy tall, rather than long, entertainment centers, dressers, and bookshelves and look for foot rests that have hidden storage space inside. Avoid furniture that takes up a lot of space, such papasan chairs.

Get Rid of Everything You Don’t Need

If you do not have room for all of your belongings, then you should consider getting rid of some of your things. Clothes that collect dust in the closet, pianos that are never used, furniture that is unnecessary, and many more unneeded items can be sold or donated in order to save space. Or, if you simply cannot part with something, consider renting a storage space.

Organize What You Do Need

Rooms always look smaller when they are cluttered. Organize you things. Put things that do not need to be out away in cupboards and closets; this will save needed floor, shelf, and counter space and make the area look more open. Organize books, magazines, and various and do not allow clutter to pile up. This will require constant cleaning, and you may need to buy closet organizers and other space-saving storage furniture.
