A Wine Guide: Choosing a Gift for an Oenophile

by Joanne Eglash June 22, 2005

Candy is dandy, but for those who love the glory of the grape, a fine wine can make an intoxicating gift.

Choosing wine should be a pleasurable experience, one that you savor. Rather than become bogged down in such outdated concepts as the “right” wine for fish or the “suitable” wine for chicken, select a wine based on the occasion.

For example, if you are choosing a wine for someone who is a dessert lover, consider buying a sparkling wine or California champagne, or a traditional dessert wine such as port or sherry. Include a small box of petit fours to earn yourself a space on the “favorite guests” list. If the recipient is a chocolate lover, consider purchasing Cabernet and an elegant box of Godiva bon bons.

Want to take a bottle of wine to a hostess or host who always serves appetizers or hors douvres? Try Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Noir. Consider pairing the wine with a basket of seasonal fruit or container of nuts.

When in doubt, many experts advise choosing a Pinot Noir or Cabernet. If you are fortunate enough to live in wine country, visit several different tasting rooms (make sure someone else drives!). You’ll discover distinct differences among wineries.

“Some wineries specialize in a particular varietal, therefore, their highest quality wine, say a Cabernet, maybe totally different than a Cabernet at another winery, says Gary B. Heck, owner and president of four wineries, including Korbel Champagne Cellers and Kenwood Vineyards, in Sonoma County. “The joy of going to tasting rooms, is that you should try what they are offering and decide what YOU like best. It is very subjective.”

Still hesitant because you worry you won’t choose the “right” wine? Consider opting for a special liqueur, such as Starbucks Coffee Liqueur (look for it in a wine store, as it is not sold in Starbucks). The lovely bottle holds a seductively delicious liqueur, exceptionally rich and smooth. Drizzled over a dish of vanilla bean ice cream, it dazzles the senses and delights the recipient.
