If you are reading this article, it is safe to assume that you read, and probably speak, English. Various dialects of English are spoken in countries all over the world; even in countries where language is not the primary language, it is often used for business communications; English is the first language of 340 million people, and an additional 600 million people speak English. Indeed, it is very easy for English speakers to believe that they do not need to know any other language. However, there are many reasons why learning a foreign language, or even several foreign languages, is beneficial.
Although English is spoken in a lot of places, it is not spoken everywhere. If you plan to travel to a country where English is not the primary language, you should know at least a little of the local language, especially if you don’t want to be limited to the touristy areas. Otherwise, you may find yourself lost or in need of help and completely unable to communicate with anyone. Additionally, people really appreciate it when you speak to them in their native language.
So Many Languages, So Little Time
There are so many languages in the world, and all of them are useful to know; unfortunately, no one person can speak every single language. This means that you need to decide which languages you want to learn, and which language you want to learn first. If you are planning to travel to another country, you should probably learn that country’s primary language. Otherwise, you can pick a language that would facilitate you career.
Immersion
The quickest way to become fluent in a foreign language is to immerse yourself in that language. In other words, put yourself in an environment where only the foreign language is spoken. At first, you will probably find the experience very frustrating, but you will be surprised at how quickly you master the language. In a few months, you can learn more than you would have in years of traditional classes.
There are a couple of ways to go about language immersion. You can just visit a foreign country where the language you want to learn is spoken. This can be very intimidating, though, especially if you do not know any one there. If you decide to go this route, you should take a couple of language classes before the trip; this will help you from feeling completely lost in the first few weeks. Also be sure to bring a good English to foreign language dictionary.
If you want a little more support, you can enroll in a foreign language immersion program. You will still visit a foreign country, but you will also take regular classes to help you learn the language. This is an ideal situation, because it gives you all the benefits of immersion, but you also learn grammar rules and have some encouragement.
Classes
If you do not have the time or money to travel, you can simply take classes. Indeed, this is the most traditional, as well as the most common method. Some classes use the immersion technique; in these classes, the instructor will not speak English, and students are not supposed to speak English, either. Other classes are taught primarily in English, although as the students advance, less and less English will be used.
If your instructor is not a native speaker of the language you are learning, you may have a difficult time learning to speak with a good accent. In order to compensate for this, you can hire a native speaker to converse with you on a regular basis. If you are having a difficult time with the language, you could also have this person tutor you.
Videos and Books
It is also possible to learn a language on your own; there are currently a plethora of instructional books and audio tapes on the market. Although this method is difficult for some people, it is also very inexpensive. Assuming that you are learning a spoken language, you should not attempt to learn the language via a book alone; your pronunciation will suffer greatly if you do. However, by using a tape and a book, you can learn a foreign language. Technology savvy people can also take advantage of online classes and computer software now available to help you learn a foreign language.
Because you will not have the structure of a class or the urgency associated with immersion methods, you will need to be extremely self-motivated. If you foresee motivation as becoming a problem, consider asking a friend to learn the language with you. This way, you can encourage each other to progress and maintain a regular schedule. This will also provide you with a conversation partner.
Practice, Practice, Practice
As anyone who studied a foreign language in high school can tell you, it is extremely easy to forget everything you have worked so hard to learn. In order to retain knowledge of a language, you have to use it. Fortunately, this is incredibly easy to do. It can even be fun. Watching movies or playing video games that are in another language is as educational as it is entertaining; videos in foreign languages can be order online. You should also read books, magazines, newspapers, and websites written in the foreign language you learned. And, of course, visiting a country where the foreign language is spoken is ideal.
