Whether you are filled with excitement, nervous tension or dread at the prospect of writing a college admissions essay, let’s face it, most schools require it. For that reason it is definitely worth putting time and effort into. You already have what you need to succeed but just in case, here are a few reminders.
Know who you are.
Unlike your GPA or SAT scores, which are no longer under your control, a college admissions essay provides you with the golden opportunity to express yourself through the written word. Spend some time thinking about who you are and what your test scores leave out and then find a way to bridge the gap. This is your opportunity to take control and shine. Seize it!
Pick your topic.
Think about the life you’ve lived so far. Keep in mind that your experiences are invaluable and define you as an individual. Think about the effect that each experience has had on you. Be honest about everything you plan to write. You gain nothing by lying or embellishing aspects of your life.
Get a feel for your essay’s audience.
Scrutinize the essay prompts, and e-mail a well-constructed question or two to the admissions board. Check the shelves of your local library or bookstores for books that contain descriptions of the typical college admissions board as well as lists of possible topics and example essays. Research, research, research!
Get to work.
Now it’s time to start writing. As you begin to write keep your audience in mind but remember that your main objective is to stay true to your topic- who you are- and be sincere. You’ve chosen a significant event in your life that made an impact on your development as an individual. Do your best to demonstrate your ability to think critically about your own experiences and to show that you have learned from the mistakes you’ve made. Life’s learning lessons, that’s what you need to focus on. Be descriptive- show, don’t tell the experience(s).
Edit, edit and edit again.
It can’t be stressed enough- go over your essay with a fine-tooth comb and then offer it to others to do the same. Don’t be shy, share it. Remember the basic rules of spelling and grammar because they WILL be noticed. This is not the time to allow yourself to get sloppy. Your writing must be polished and meticulous.
Finalize and send it in.
Be detail-oriented about your essay. Even the smallest detail is relevant to the finished product. Go back to the guidelines that were provided with your application and make sure you followed them to the letter. Once this is done, print out your essay, add it to the rest of your work and send it in.
