Remembering the names of people we meet is challenging. This is especially
true for individuals who work or travel in circles that grants them the
opportunity of meeting new and interesting people. Here are a few techniques to
assist with putting a name with the face.
Listen
Pay attention when people
introduce themselves. Listening is the key to remembering a person’s name.
Sometimes we tend to become so wrapped up in what we want to say, that we
ignore or disregard statements made by others. At the end of conversation,
confirm the person’s name and record it.
Repeat
If possible, repeat the
person’s name at three times during the conversation. Additionally,
introduce the person to someone else. In situations when you cannot recall
a name, a friend or co-worker may be able to assist.
Relax
Shy people tend to forget
names because they remain uneasy or self-conscious on the initial meeting.
They spend the entire conversation scrutinizing them selves. Staying calm
and giving people eye contact will help remember names. Take the focus off
of yourself and place it with the other person.
Record
Immediately after meeting a
new person, write down their name. If they offer you a business card, use
the back of the card to record where you met the person and a piece of
information about the person such as their occupation or specific
interest. Recording information is a proven method for recalling important
information. In addition to remembering their name, they will also be
impressed if you remember details of the initial meeting.
Name Games
Associate the person’s name
with a family member or friend
Quick alphabet surfing can
aid with remembering an old acquaintances name. Begin with the letter A
and randomly list names in your head that begin with that letter. By the
time you reach the letter Z, you will likely recall the person’s name.
