Hypertension is a disease marked by continually abnormal high or elevated blood pressure, especially arterial blood pressure. It is a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease.
Characteristics of Hypertension
Frequently there are no apparent early warning signs
Elevated blood pressure
In most hypertension cases, an adult’s blood pressure will read greater than 140 over 90 (the average normal blood pressure of an adult is generally in the 110-120 over 70-80 range)
Cause is often unknown, although there is a possibility of discovering an underlying illness
May be hereditary
May be related to lifestyle choices including smoking, obesity, alcohol consumption, inactivity, poor diet, and emotional stress
Can occur with older age
In some cases, results from an imbalance in the vasoconstriction/fluid retention systems or atherosclerosis
Linked to cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, kidney disease, stroke, and eye disease
To Lower Blood Pressure
Consult a physician and follow his or her advice
Low-fat, low-sodium diet that contains calcium, potassium, and fiber
Exercise regularly
Quit smoking
Limit alcohol consumption
Reach/maintain a healthy weight
Medication or drug therapy as recommended by physician
Manage stress
Supplements, herbal therapies, and acupuncture are possible alternative treatments
