Summer offers unique opportunities to enjoy NYC's arts for free.
Central Park SummerStage's - Rumsey Playfield
From mid-June to mid-August, almost every day of the week, singers, dancers, and performers take the stage at East 72nd St., just off Fifth Ave. Some examples of 2005 performances include the 3rd Brazilian Art & Film Festival of NYC, singer Cassandra Wilson, and the Trisha Brown Dance Company. Expect big crowds and tight spaces.
Good Morning America – GMA's Summer Concert Series
Held on Bryant Park (41st St. and 6th Ave.) every Friday between 7am-9am. Although you do not need tickets, there is limited space, so you should plan on arriving early. How early depends on the star singing that day --When U2 appeared on May 20th, lines started forming at 3am. Other stars singing in the 2005 series include Avril Lavigne, Santana, Rascal Flatts, Ringo Starr, and Queen Latifah.
The Today Show – Rockefeller Center Stage
At the window of the Today Show (49th St. and Rockefeller Center) every Friday from April to July, starting at 7am. Big name stars, including Phil Collins, Sting, and Tim McGraw. First-come, first-serve access. Arrive at least two hours early to secure a spot.
Madison Square Park Conservancy – Oval Lawn
Less-known but equally impressive musicians perform at the historic park from June to August. Jazz, folk, and pop performers such as Dar Williams, Luciana Souza, and the Kenny Garrett Quartet will take the stage on 2005.
Seaside Summer Concerts – Asser Levy Park, Brooklyn
For almost 30 years, big stars have been delighting the public for free every Thursday night all summer long. The series specializes in bringing classic stars, from Liza Minnelli to Michael Bolton and Sheena Easton. No tickets needed but you do need a chair (no standing allowed). You could bring your own or rent one in the spot for $5.
Music at the Piers - Main Plaza at Chelsea Piers
The Jazz series at Pier 62 sounds off every Saturday and Sunday from June to September. You'll find all varieties here, from the warm sounds of Suzy Schwartz Brazil Jazz to the mellow Chuck Braman Jazz Group. Performances start at noon.
Philharmonic in the Parks – The NYC Philharmonic Orchestra
Why pay $60 for a ticket when you can see the orchestra for free and enjoy the greenery and fresh air of NYC parks at the same time? Performances move around the boroughs, performing mostly in Manhattan, but also in Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Long Island. Bring candles (it gets very dark after sunset), and a jacket (it also can get cold).
