Tips on Safely Sharing a Bed with Infant

by Valencia P. Higuera August 04, 2005

Although baby experts and doctors recommend newborn sleeping in their own cribs and bassinettes as opposed to the parent's bed, many mothers discover that parting with their newborn at night is more difficult than expected. However, there are some tips that will ensure that babies enjoy a safe night's sleep when bunking with mom and dad.

Avoid Falls

  • Parents should push the bed as close to the wall as possible. Despite slim chances, it is possible for babies to fall off the bed during the night. This is more common when babies share the bed with only one parent.

Remove Heavy Objects

  • It would be wise for parents to remove heavy comforters, pillows, quilts, and so forth. These bed items could accidentally cover the baby's face during the night causing suffocation.

Guard Rails

  • Although an extreme measure, some parents who permanently bunk with their babies and toddlers may consider installing a removable guard rail. This way, the child will not roll off the bed when re-positioning their self during the night.

Prevent Rolling On Top of Baby

  • Many parents are understandably concerned about the possibility of rolling onto their baby and smothering them. To be on the safe side, parents who are known erratic sleepers may want to find alternate sleeping arrangements for their baby. Individuals who normally remain in one sleeping position throughout the night, or who sleep close to the beds edge, are less likely to roll on top of an infant.
  • Waterbeds are a "don't" when sleeping with babies.
  • Parents who take medications intended, or that cause heavy sedation should not bunk with children. In the event that a parent does roll onto a child, they are less likely to realize their position when heavily medicated.

Sharing a bed is a perfect way for parent and child to bond. Nonetheless, parents should introduce children to their own bed early. Children have a tendency of becoming acquainted with bad habits early. A simple thing as sharing a bed with your infant can easily turn into a huge mess as the child ages.
