Basics for Building Your Wardrobe

by Anika Logan August 09, 2005

When you are shopping for clothing essentials to build your wardrobe, keep these general ideas in mind. They will go a long way in making your wardrobe outstanding ladies!

What to look for

Always choose well-fitting clothes.

Buy items you feel good in and that suit your body type.

To get the most for your money, consider investing more in fashions you get the most wear from- the ones that will take you through the long seasons of autumn and winter, like outer wear.

Three or four tops

That’s really all you need to start, sweaters and/or blouses, depending on your particular taste. Or consider buying half and half.

Three bottoms

All you really need is two pairs of pants and a skirt to begin building your wardrobe. If you’re not a skirt wearer then stick to pants. One of the pairs of pants should be black (it’s a fashion staple and black goes with everything).

A suit

Everyone needs at least one suit, for those occasions when nothing else will do. But don’t make a habit of splitting a suit by wearing the pants alone, for example. Most likely that will mean that the pieces are dry cleaned separately and that’s bad news for the life of the suit. When one piece gets more wear than another, you lose the suit look that you wanted in the first place. It will be very obvious to other people that one piece is more worn than the other!

A fun or novelty blazer

It’s a good idea to look for one in a texture or tweed. Try finding something that will give you a burst of color. Look for a jacket you can wear with any of your pants, including jeans.

Accessories

Think accessories, accessories, accessories. They tend to be the hottest thing every season- belts, brooches, shoes, shawls, purses, scarves, and jewelry of every kind. Here’s your chance to add more personality to your clothing and if you like, change the look of an outfit.
