Flower Arranging for Beginners

by May Monten August 18, 2005

Fresh cut flowers are even more beautiful when they are arranged in a pleasing display. Here are some easy tips:

You can be creative and make your own vase

Maybe you received an unexpected bouquet of flowers as a gift (lucky you!), and you don’t have a vase handy. Or maybe you just want to do something different.
  • Try using an empty bottle. Put a piece of ribbon around the narrowest part of the bottle, and tie it in a pretty bow.
  • Glue shiny wrapping paper onto an empty tall thin can.
  • Use a plastic cup whose color matches the color of at least one of the flowers in the bouquet

Choose an overall shape

Do you want a tall, thin arrangement, or a rounder, full arrangement? Consider the flowers that you want to use and where you will be placing them. Tall arrangements are dramatic. Full arrangements convey warmth. Tall arrangements provide an accent to a room. Full arrangements fill space and make good centerpieces.

Balance large flowers, small flowers, filler, and leaves

The different kinds and sizes of flowers, along with whatever filler and leaves you use, are your raw materials. Think of them as notes. A composer puts individual notes together to make a pleasing musical composition. In the same way, you will put your different flowers, filler, and foliage together to make a pleasing visual composition.

Easy tips for tall arrangements

  • Use a narrow vase.
  • Choose the flowers that you want to be in the center of the arrangement. These should be the most eye-catching flowers in your bouquet.
  • Cut the stems of those flowers so that the flowers are three to four times as tall as your vase.
  • For the most dramatic effect, be sparing in your use of other material. A few leaves or a few smaller flowers are all that you need.

Easy tips for full arrangements

  • Use a short, wide vase.
  • If you plan to use your arrangement for a centerpiece, space your most eye-catching flowers evenly on all sides of the arrangement.
  • Continue placing your other flowers into the vase, along with any leaves and other filler material you want to use.
  • Cut your materials, as you place them, so that the overall shape of your arrangement forms an oval or a semi-circle.
  • If you need something to hold your flowers in place in the vase, you can buy foam or pins that are specially intended for that purpose from your florist.

Enjoy!

There are no absolute rules in flower arranging. The most important thing is to create an arrangement that is pleasing to the eye. The more you practice, the sharper your creative instincts will become! There is a lot of pleasure to be had in arranging flowers, as well as in enjoying the arrangement after it is done and in seeing the pleasure that it gives to others.
