Top 5 Mistakes You May Make When Going Out to the local Bar:
Not Doing Your Homework:
Research your local bars and clubs. Call each one and ask how many bouncers
they have and when their peak hours are. Call the local police department and
ask how many times they are called to that bar every night. Ask what night they
are called out the most. Choose the bar with the least amount of police calls,
the most bouncers, and go during non-peak hours.
Going Solo:
Never go out alone. Make plans with as many friends as you can and stick
together throughout the night. Take a cab, or get a ride that will pick you up
and drop you off at the door. Do not wait outside for a ride. You should be
able to stay inside and wait for your ride to come in. Even make bathroom trips
as a group. Never leave anyone alone.
Being Unaware:
Always be aware of your surroundings. This is the advice that many
self-defense instructors give to their students, and its good advice. Pay
attention to who is around you and what is going on.
Leaving Your Drink Unattended:
Never leave your drink anywhere you cannot see it. Try to keep it in your
hands at all times. Furthermore, don’t let anyone buy you a drink. Even someone
you think you can trust may deceive you. Drink spring water with a twist cap on
it. If your drink tastes salty, soapy, looks cloudy, or has particles in it,
discard it and get a fresh drink.
Not Trusting Your Gut:
If you feel uncomfortable with anyone at anytime walk away, or leave the
situation. Jennifer Lawler, award-winning author of DOJO WISDOM: 100
Simple Ways to Become a Stronger, Calmer, More
Courageous Person, advises to trust your instincts. “You’ll never know when you
avoided a potentially dangerous situation.”
