Ultra-Violet Protective Coatings: A Must For Glasses
Everyone knows they should wear sunscreen to protect the skin from sun damage. But did you know how important sun protection is for your eyes?
Ultra-Violet Exposure Contributes to Disease
Studies have shown that repeated exposure to sunlight can speed up the growth rate of cataracts, and contribute to many diseases of the eye, like macular degeneration and glaucoma.
And all that adds up to loss of eyesight. Cataracts are commonly removed, but glaucoma and macular degeneration can steal your sight permanently.
But you wear sunglasses. That’s enough, right?
Sunglasses Aren’t Enough
Wrong. Ultra-violet rays don’t come from just the sun. They can be emitted by indoor full-spectrum lighting, and computer screens. As you read this, your eyes are exposed to UV rays.
If you wear clear glasses, have them coated with a UV protected filter. This inexpensive coating can save your sight. And it’s clear. No one will know it’s there.
An Added Benefit of Lightweight Lenses
If you wear glasses with lightweight or thinner lenses, there’s good news. You’re probably already protected. Polycarbonate and hi-index lens materials block UV rays because of the composition of the lens material. No coating needed!
Regular plastic lenses will need to be treated. Tints are nice, and they make the sun easier for your eyes to take, but they have no protective qualities. It only costs about twenty dollars, and can make a lifetime of difference for your vision.
