Be brave and open up the closet. Most Americans will find a jumble of clothing that includes never-worn garments, mistakes bought on sale, items that match nothing else in the closet, and other undesirable items. Before bemoaning a limited wardrobe, be smart and build a better wardrobe - even on a budget.
Simple Steps Toward Building A Wardrobe For Less
First, catalog the clothing. Sort through the garments and remove anything that doesn't get worn, anything outgrown, and any stained garments - the party dress with the eggnog stain that won't come out or the barbecue stained jacket. Donate the better items to a local clothes closet, shelter, or Goodwill. Toss the others unless quilting is a favorite hobby.
Make a list of good clothing and make another of needed items. Would a black skirt or navy trousers be an asset? If a red blazer would mix and match with many other garments, mark it down as a "must-have."
Start shopping, list in hand. The first rule of building a decent wardrobe is to buy the best quality garments possible. Don't settle for inexpensive discount store clothing that won't last the season. Be savvy and scout department stores, fashion boutiques and other outlets for bargains. Better made clothing will last longer, wear better, and in some cases remain fashionable even after the current season ends.
Choose classic styles when possible. As noted, classic styles - that black wool skirt, the perfect blazer, the little black dress for formal occasions - seldom go out of style. Invest in a few and have a wardrobe that can last for years.
When choosing separates, try to build several outfits from a few pieces. Mix and match. Start with a navy skirt, add a blouse with cream and navy tones, choose a pair of navy slacks with cream trim, add a navy blazer or pair of trousers. Choose more than one blouse that fits the ensemble then wear a few basic garments in multiple combinations.
Learn what colors flatter and stay within that color scheme. If red brings out the best highlights in hair, favors the complexion, and looks dynamite, go for reds. Same for greens, yellows, browns, blues. Most women - and men - know what colors bring out the best so build a wardrobe heavy on those shades.
When possible, go for solid colors, especially in things such as skirts, slacks, trousers, crop pants, and blazers. It is easier to mix and match with solid colors to match with.
Buy on sale when possible. This does not mean load up an armful of clothing in terrible colors or looks because they're clearances. It means be wise. Scan sales racks for garments that flatter in color schemes that are attractive. It may take a little more time but the end result can be a flattering, classic wardrobe that cost very little.
Visit consignment stores. In most, the merchandise is clean and priced considerably lower than most retailers. Some garments may be little worn. Buy only if a garment is the right one at the right price. Consignment stores are a cut above used clothing shops so don't feel embarrassed. Try to choose garments that are not distinctive like a navy blazer. Don't pick a unusual paisley blouse, because someone might recognize it as Aunt Maude's.
Accessories. Add scarves, hats, jewelry, shoes, and purses to outfits to make each outfit unique. Choose a basic theme - silver or gold or pearls - and stick with it. Use lapel pins to catch the eye, scarves to bring out colors, and hats to get attention. A few good quality accessories can make an outfit fantastic.
Stay Savvy
Be creative when combining garments. Spend within a budget and buy for yourself. Purge closet and dresser drawers of unflattering, unwanted clothing. Be the fashionable person lurking within without spending a small fortune.
Continue to shop and add to your wardrobe as needed. Remember that it's not necessary to buy every item in a single shopping excursion or over one weekend. Buy as you can and put together a smashing wardrobe collection. In time, anyone can have a fashionable, classic wardrobe of quality clothing.
Be sure to include clothing for every occasion. Even if formal nights are a rare occurrence, have one or two formal dresses ready for that annual office party or a special night out. In addition to business clothes, have a few fun outfits for recreation.
If clothing can make the man or woman, then make sure that clothing reflects who you are in a style that makes a statement!
