A Unique Invention: The Washlet Toilet

by Rob Goss September 12, 2005

A Great Invention

Imagine sitting down on a warm toilet seat about to answer nature’s call when you suddenly notice a unique looking control panel on the wall.

One of the buttons is bright orange, like a warning light. Another button has a picture of what appears to be two buttocks with a beam of some sort aimed straight between them.

What do you do? Should you touch anything, or perhaps sneak off to a different toilet? Are you about to have a painful experience?

Don’t Panic

Welcome to the Washlet Toilet, another unique invention from Japan.

Not only can this toilet clean your delicate areas with a combination of controllable sprays and water temperatures, but newer models can even give a quick blow dry.

Where and How

You don’t have to buy one of these unique toilets to take home in order to experience the joys of this invention as most big department stores, Japanese inns and hotels have them. Of course, should you want to take a unique souvenir from Japan, you should plan to spend at least $400 for a basic model.

While finding one of these unique toilets is easy, using this wonderful invention is pretty difficult for the uninitiated.

Using a Washlet Toilet

Step one of course is to start the water jet, which is done by pressing the button that has a set of buttocks on it. Then brace yourself because you never know if someone has cranked the water pressure onto full to play a joke on whoever follows them.

Hopefully you will find a toilet that hasn’t been sabotaged. But if you get in any trouble just hit the big orange button to stop the water.

The next step is to adjust the temperature and power to suit you. This is where you are on your own as, other than the start and stop buttons, the control panel looks like something from a sci-fi movie.

An Invention You Should Try

Persevere, press some buttons and enjoy the adventure. This is one invention that is worth checking out when you travel in Japan.
