Gamblers' and Gamers' Guide To Tunica, Mississippi

by Lee Ann Sontheimer Murphy September 27, 2005

Down in the Mississippi Delta where the blues were born, where cotton and catfish are king, casinos are now the top attraction. As the area around Tunica and Robinsonville, Mississippi fast becomes the nation’s fourth largest gambling destination, more and more gamers are discovering Tunica.

The Casinos In Tunica

Located south of Memphis in northern Mississippi, Tunica is now The South’s Casino Capitol. Easily accessible from Arkansas and other Southern states, Tunica is where the action is. Since 1992 when the first casino opened for gaming, Tunica County Mississippi has gone from one of the poorest counties in the United States to one of the richest counties in the state.

More than eight major casinos have located in the Tunica region and gaming runs twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Major casinos open in Tunica include Bally’s Casino, Fitzgerald’s Casino, Gold Strike Casino, Hollywood Casino, Horseshoe Casino, Sam’s Town Gambling Hall, and the Sheraton Casino. Each has a different theme and style from the farmhouse look of Bally’s to the Irish castle style of Fitzgeralds to the old West appearance at Sam’s Town.

Each of the casinos offer the same world class gambling, games, high quality food, fine lodging, and other amusements that experienced gamers can find in Vegas or Atlantic City. Most of the casinos have adjacent hotels and other lodging is available. More than 6,000 hotel rooms are available in the Tunica-Robinsonville area. Chose from staying in a luxury casino hotel, chain hotel, privately owned motels, or cozy bed-and-breakfasts. All are an option in the Tunica area.

Top entertainers offer entertainment at the Tunica casinos.

Check with individual casinos or the Tunica Convention and Visitors Bureau for upcoming performers and dates. Over fifty restaurants offer fine foods – everything from Memphis style barbecue to Mississippi Delta catfish and fine steaks.

Beyond Gaming

The town of Tunica is just ten miles south of the casino area and offers an old-fashioned small town experience. Tunica’s downtown district offers shopping and in the area, visitors will also find factory outlet shopping.

Other amusements include championship golf courses, sporting clay shoots, pools, spas, and the brand new Tunica River Park along the banks of the mighty Mississippi River.

The Tunica River Park offers visitors a look at Old Man River with a museum, visitor’s center, outdoor trails and exhibits, an observation deck and comfortable verandas with views of the river and more. Aquariums and dioramas acquaint the visitor with the native marine life and history of the river. Regional history of the Delta, the cotton fields that made Tunica a regional center for the past center, and catfish farming are all represented at the River Park.

The crowning jewel of the Tunica River Park is the Tunica Queen, a 300-seat paddle wheel boat that provides tours on the Mississippi. Options range from simple excursion tours to dinner cruises and more. The Tunica Queen is the newest non-gambling attraction in the area and is fast becoming a popular favorite.

Some of the best lodging choices include Bally’s Saloon Gambling Hotel, Fitzgeralds Casino Hotel, Grand Casino Hotel, Best Western Tunica North, and the Hollywood Casino Resort Hotel. One of the features at the Hollywood is the Batmobile. The Batmobile is just one of many movie memorabilia on display.

Combine a trip to Tunica with a visit to Memphis, home of Elvis, Beale Street, the Pink Palace, the National Civil Rights Museum, and more. Tunica is a gambling destination worth visiting… and odds are, the trip will be fun!
