How To Avoid Exposure To Molds

by Lee Ann Sontheimer Murphy September 24, 2005

Mold can grow almost anywhere in the right environment but when mold grows inside your home, it can be a major health risk.  Mold exposure can cause asthma, allergy flare-ups, allergic reactions, and other respiratory diseases.  Children and the elderly are at the highest risk.

Preventing Mold

Humid conditions lead to the development of mold.  Reduce indoor humidity by making sure that dryers are well-vented.  Bathrooms should be vented and equipped with an exhaust fan that should be run during baths and showers.  Use of exhaust fans when cooking or running the dishwasher can also help prevent mold by drying the air.  Use air conditioners when possible and install a dehumidifier.  All of these steps can put an end to conditions favorable for mold development.

If a water leak is a contributing factor to mold, find the source of the leak and fix it.  If repairs are beyond your own capability, call a plumber.

A well-insulated home is less likely to become a breeding ground for mold so limit the possibility of mold by adding insulation in mold-prone areas.

Remove any carpeting in household areas where there is moisture or dampness.  Never put carpeting down in areas that are often wet to prevent mold.

Mold Removal Tips

If mold is a problem in the home, it must be removed for health reasons.  Buildings that have become damp or wet because of heavy rains, roof leaks, floods, or plumbing issues must be cleaned and dried within 24 to 48 hours.  Let rooms and buildings air out.  Use fans to blow drier area through and clean all surfaces to prevent mold formation.

If mold does form, all surfaces must be cleaned or replaced.  Absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles, furniture, carpet, or drapes must be replaced.  Washing will not remove mold and the mold will return.  Non-porous surfaces can be cleaned with water and bleach combinations or with detergent.  Bleach and water can be a 50/50 ratio; less bleach to water ratios are sometimes used.

Mold prevents a health risk to anyone so if mold becomes a problem in your home, don't hesitate.  Deal with the problem immediately before the situation grows even more serious.
