Holographic Storage: The Holy Grail Terabyte Storage

by Kevin Mercurio June 22, 2005

There is allot set to change in the world of information storage technology. While the current contenders for next most popular format are Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, capable of 50 gigs dual layer and 30 gigs dual layer respectively, there looms in the distance a technology that will render them both irrelevant. Holographic storage is a promising technology that will be capable of storing 10 terabits per centimenter, once the perfect photopolymer disc is developed. Holographic storage uses several lasers to write light patterns in 3 dimensions through a disc. Unlike traditional CDs and DVDs which use one layer , at the most 2, holographic storage will write all the way through the material. Holographic storage also boasts another benefit over traditional CD/DVD formats, it allows for associative retrieval. Associative retrieval will allow data to be fully reconstructed even with only a partial data serach pattern. The timeline for Holographic storage's arrival onto the market is hard to pinpoint, however it is approximated that the perfect photopolymer will be ready in approximately 2 to 3 years.
