Cerebral Palsy and Supported Living

by Sandra Bell June 24, 2005

What is futures planning?

Futures planning is a series of meetings with the individual or with her and her friends and family to assist her to dream of a future and then to come up with some concrete plans and goals to make that dream happen. People with disabilities are often not used to thinking broadly or ambitiously about their future. Dreams may be as small as learning to cross a street to as big as getting a Ph.d. People with quadraplegic cerebral palsy have bungie jumped, skied and gone scuba diving. Not everything will work out and failure is certainly an option but that's the way life is for the rest of us too.
