The Avery Point
lighthouse is located on the mouth of the Thames
River and on the University
of Connecticut, Avery Point Campus.
This 41-foot concrete lighthouse was established in 1943 and first lit its
beacon light in 1944. Since 1967 the light is no longer operational. The
lighthouse grounds are open to the public but the lighthouse itself is not.
The Black Rock
Harbor lighthouse is located on the
south end of Fayerweather Island
near Bridgeport in Fairfield
County. This lighthouse was first
activated in 1817 and was deactivated in 1932. Throughout the years this
lighthouse has fallen victim to vandalism and neglect but now it has been restored
and has been relit although it is not used as a navigational aid.
Maine
Built in 1835, the Curtis Island
lighthouse is located at the Camden Harbor
entrance in Penobscot Bay
in Knox County.
Curtis Island
was named after Cyrus Curtis, the founder of the Saturday Evening Post. This
lighthouse is operated by the Coast Guard and is still an active aid to
navigation.
The Pemaquid Point lighthouse is located in Pemaquid Point at the entrance
to Muscongus Bay
in Lincoln County.
This 38-foot tall lighthouse was established in 1827, has been rebuilt, and is
still in operation. The area surrounding this lighthouse has been designated as
the Pemaquid Point
Lighthouse Park.
The old keeper’s house has been converted into a Fisherman’s Museum that
displays exhibits on the history of the local fishing and lobstering
industries.
Massachusetts
The Marblehead lighthouse is
located in the Chandler Hovey
Park on Marblehead Neck in Massachusetts
Bay. The station was established in 1835 and the light was first
lit in 1896. This lighthouse is made of cast iron and is skeletal rather than
enclosed with brick or rock. The grounds are open year-round but to tour the
lighthouse you must do so by special arrangement.
Scituate lighthouse is located
at Cedar Point in Scituate Harbor
in Plymouth County
and was established in 1811. This 50-foot tower still stands next to the
original keeper’s quarters. This lighthouse is now used as a private aid to
navigation. The daughter’s of the first lighthouse keeper play an important
role in Scituate history during the
War of 1812.
