Bottle or Breast, Which is Best?

by Susie McGee May 19, 2005

Bonding

Your baby will quickly recognize that you are her source of food and nurturing, and there is nothing like having a precious infant totally dependent on you. If you already have other children, you are well-acquainted with how quickly your helpless newborn will grow into an independent toddler. For now, you can hold her closely as she nurses at your breast, but eventually, she won't have time to spare, much less, time to let you hold her for longer than a few minutes before she is off and running, looking for her next big adventure. You can feel the ultimate satisfaction in knowing that you are the source of life for your baby.

  • Health Factor

Studies have shown that breastfed babies generally have fewer allergies, respiratory problems, and ear infections. Research indicates that babies who are breastfed receive their mother's antibodies, which help to fight illness and disease. Breast milk is also perceived as easier to digest than formula. After all, there isn't any guesswork in what type or brand to buy. Breast milk almost always has the right ingredients.

  • Advantages of Bottle Feeding

With such strong arguments and evidence, why would anybody choose not to breastfeed? Actually, here are many points that breastfeeding advocates never talk about, and those who choose not to breastfeed are quick to point them out.

    • Convenience

Bottle feeding can be very convenient. Unless you are very comfortable breastfeeding in public (and some women are, which is fine), if you are at the mall, at church, at a meeting, or any public place, you have to find a place to discreetly feed your baby. That can be inconvenient to say the least! Have you ever tried feeding your baby while sitting on a commode in bathroom stall of a supermarket because you wanted some privacy? When you imagine this scenario, it isn't fun! Yes, some women's clothing stores have jumped on the breastfeeding bandwagon and actually provided wonderful lounges with comfortable couches and chairs for nursing mothers. However, if you aren't shopping at one of these stores, you may be out of luck. Bottle feeding can be more convenient in such cases.
