How to Become a Truck Driver and Find a Truck Driving Job

Truck Driving Schools

If you are looking for a truck driving job, a truck driving school might be just the thing for you. Taking at a course at a truck driving school will give you all the skills required for your CDL, and depending on the school they might even assist you in finding your first truck driving job. Passing a truck driving course might also earn you higher pay, depending on the school.

When looking for a truck driving school, make sure that you find a school which is in the same state which you reside. Because you will be required to get your license from the same state in which you live and intend to work, you'll want to make sure that your school is following the same program that is required by that state.

When looking for a truck driving school, there are a few things you should look at. Is the school certified? Certification is issued by the Professional Truck Driver Institute (PTDI), based in Alexandria, Virginia. While certification is not mandatory for truck driving schools, finding a school that is certified is a guarantee of quality.

Besides certification there is also accreditation, which is authorized by the US Department of Education. Accreditation is a very expensive process and requires strict adherence to rigorous guidelines. There are very few schools that are accredited, so an unaccredited school is not necessarily a bad one, but an accredited school is definitely going to be an excellent choice.

You should also look at the length of time of the course. If the course is not very long (less than three weeks), it is unlikely that the school is going to assist you very much. It takes some time to learn the intricacies of driving a truck and hauling a tractor-trailer, and you want to ensure that you actually learn something from your truck driving school.

Time driving is also an important factor. Most schools will tell the length of the course in hours, and how many of those hours are behind the wheel. However, behind the wheel does not always mean actually driving, so be sure to find out exactly how much driving time you will be given, and how much of that is on the streets and how much on the practice field.

Finding the right truck driving school is very important, and you want to make sure you find the best one before you go off to start your career as a truck driver.
