How to Survive a Stalking Ex-lover

by C Williams May 26, 2005

Never accept any contact or gifts from your ex

Do not allow him/her into your home. Do not talk to this person on the phone. Do not meet your stalker, even in a public place. You must cut all ties (if possible) between yourself and your ex. If you have children with your ex, communicate through an attorney, and never meet the stalker alone. You do not want to give the impression that you like the attention that this person is giving you. You want to make it clear that you do not want your ex on your property and/or in your presence.

Change your phone numbers and locks to your doors

Make sure that your home is secure. You may consider getting a home alarm system with a remote “panic button.” When you feel that you are in danger, you can press the button and the police will be alerted. At home, always keep all of your doors locked, even when you just going into your own backyard. Your ex could slip inside your home and catch you unaware. Consider buying a dog. A new dog is great to have around because your ex would be considered a stranger to your pet. The dog will alert you if someone is lurking near your home. As a security precaution, never hide spare keys around your house, especially if your ex is familiar with the area.

Decide who your friends are

Refrain from sharing personal information – where you spend your time, and your new phone number to mutual friends, and possibly, your ex’s relatives (if there are no children involved). Former loves have a way of getting mutual friends on their side. Before you know it, people who you thought would have your best interest at heart, will tip your ex off to your whereabouts. Don’t be overly suspicious, but do be cautious. Well-meaning friends can sometimes do more harm than good.

Vary your movements

Avoid taking the same routes. Travel with groups as often as possible and do not walk alone or with your kids in secluded areas at night. If there is security available at your workplace, contact the guard whenever you work late. Always be aware of your surroundings.
