Banished to the Bed: Surviving Bed Rest During Pregnancy

by Rita Templeton May 26, 2005

First, define “bed rest.”

It’s important to ask your doctor exactly what you can and cannot do, in order to avoid having to call with questions later (or taking a chance on doing something that you’re not supposed to). There are different types of bed rest, and they will vary from doctor to doctor, so ask your practitioner’s opinion on:

  • Bathroom habits – can you get up to go, or will a bed pan be required? What about bathing – are baths or showers preferred, and for how long?
  • Are you allowed to get out of bed for sitting-up activities like watching TV or surfing the ‘Net? If so, are there time limits you should follow?
  • Can you still have sex?
  • Can you climb stairs?
  • Is there any housework you can do, or should it all be designated to other family members?
  • Will you still be able to care for your children during the day, or will you need to arrange for alternate care?
  • While you’re in bed, is there a certain position (i.e., on your left side) that you should rest in?
  • If your employer has work available for you to do at home, should you do it?
  • Can you prepare a snack and drink for yourself?

Most importantly, ask your doctor what warning signs and symptoms you should look for regarding your specific condition, and know when to call the hospital.
