Safe Candle Use

by Lee Ann Sontheimer Murphy October 11, 2005

Safety Measures

If a fire from a candle does ignite something, smother the flame while small if at all possible.

Never use water on a wax fire - the impact of cold water on heated wax can cause the wax to explode around the room, causing a large fire.

Have a fire extinguisher handy and use it if necessary. It can be wise to have more than one fire extinguisher in different areas of the home.

If any fire is larger than you can contain within moments, evacuate your home and call the fire department.

Plan safe evacuation routes with your family in the event of any fire.

Play it safe and burn candles with care.
