Purchase the Proper Equipment

A child-size toilet or an attachable seat is a good idea for beginners. The regular toilet can be overwhelming if you are trying to sit a small child on a large seat. Having a toilet that is proportionate in size can be exciting and make it fun for your toddler. You want to make the procedure as enjoyable as possible. If potty time is fun and rewarding then they are more likely to want to continue to have it. This leads us into our next step that can assist you in your endeavors….

Establish a Routine

Creating a set routine is extremely important when it comes to teaching a child something new. Let your child sit on the potty at least once a day (they can be fully clothed if necessary). You can start right after breakfast or at bath time; whenever he/she is more likely to have a bowel movement is probably the best time. You don’t have to go into detail about going to the bathroom, just get them used to sitting on the toilet and have it readily accessible. Be sure not to “push” if they don’t want to sit on it then don’t use force. If they refuse to use their potty then simply put it away for a few days or weeks and try again at a later date. Get Rid of the Diapers

Let your child sit on the potty without diapers. If you did not do this before then make sure they are sitting with a bare bottom. This allows them to get a feel of the toilet and get used to the seat. At this point you can explain to them about using the toilet and how you always undress (pull pants down) before you go on the potty like mommy and daddy do. Explain the Procedure

Show your toddler where the “poop and pee” goes. If they actually go in the toilet you can let them watch it flush or next time they have a bowel movement in their diaper take it to the toilet, dispose of it and let them flush it or watch you do it.
