A Common Sense Approach to Purchasing Software

by Kathy Gentile June 10, 2005

Try Software Before You Buy It

Before you purchase any new software program, take some time to do some research to find just the right program to meet your needs while staying within your budget. The Internet is full of valuable resources that allow software consumers to download and try out software for free. Be careful, though. Just like the retail store with all its choices of software, you can easily become overwhelmed with all the options available to you online. So, let’s start with a little bit of education.

Basically, there are three types of software available for download to consumers, all for free. You may find different definitions for each type, but understanding the basics of each will go a long way when making a decision as to what software to download.

Freeware is the term used for software that consumers can download off of the Internet free of charge. Normally, all freeware can be used for free (unlimited time, no strings attached). Freeware may contain annoying advertisements, others may not. Also, you may see requests for donations from the creators of this type of software to help continue the funding of the software for future releases and to keep future downloads free as well. The types and quality of freeware run the gambit, but there is a lot of high quality freeware available, depending upon your needs. Usually freeware is an excellent resource for someone who is on a tight budget or just looking for a quick solution. The downside of freeware may be limited help resources to learn the program, so you would need to learn it on your own. And, since it is free, individuals or companies offering the freeware programs do not accept liability for its usage. Bottom line, if you use freeware, you should read up on it before downloading it and understand that you download and use it at your own risk.
