Men are generally less experienced when it comes to caring for, and interacting with an infant. Since their teenage years, women have babysat for infants and are eager to embrace and cuddle babies. Thus women are aware of how to change, feed, bathe, and hold an infant. Newborns are tiny, thus fathers who have never been around a baby may feel uneasy. This nervousness prevents them from bonding and becoming involved with the baby. Fortunately, there are things that a father can do that will help ease their minds. It is imperative that both mothers and fathers bond with a newborn. This becomes a rewarding experience for everyone.
Bonding with a newborn begins at birth. It begins at an earlier time for mothers. As expected, some fathers may not want to be present for the birth of their baby. The thought of witnessing the delivery may make them panicky and queasy – this is a common problem among young fathers. However, they ought to share this experience with the mother. Fathers can play the part of the encouraging and sympathetic coach. Although wives and girlfriends may express a few choose words whenever a pain hits, they are grateful when the father joins them in the delivery room. Fathers may also be allowed to cut the umbilical cord. In some cases, mothers are heavily sedated after the birth because the baby was delivered by a cesarean section. This is a wonderful time for the father to connect, and take pleasure in some alone time with the baby.
Fathers Must be Allowed to Showcase Parenting Skills
The best way to get fathers involved with caring for an infant is for mothers to step back and allow them to shoulder some responsibilities. There are instances when fathers are excited to help. However, mothers may create tension because they are continually breathing down their necks and passing judgment on every action. Not everyone is born with a child rearing instinct. In some cases, this gut reaction must be taught or developed. Once the newborn is allowed to leave the hospital, mothers and fathers should work out a schedule. Fathers must be given a certain task. From time to time a mother will prefer to handle the lion's share of the responsibility in the beginning. However, the best way for fathers to become relaxed with the newborn is by jumping in and getting their feet wet. Fathers could be the one responsible for getting the baby dressed and bathed in the morning, or they could handle bathing the baby at night. Mothers and fathers may perhaps find a middle ground and opt for shift nights. In this instance, each has a chosen night that they will sit with the baby. This allows the other parent to enjoy a full nights rest.
