How to Prevent Illness

by Laurie June 21, 2005

Wash Your Hands

Germs are everywhere. Now, this is not a fact that you should dwell on; doing so can result in rather paranoid behavior. However, you should exercise proper precaution. Wash your hands frequently. This is the simplest and most effective piece of advice that you will ever receive. You must wash your hands. If you work with the children, take public transportation, or work in the service industry, washing your hands is even more critical. Also, avoid touching your mouth and eyes, lest you allow germs on your hands to infect you.

Get Vaccinated

Modern medicine is a miraculous thing. Take advantage of the benefits of science and get the vaccinations that are available to you. Flu vaccines, for example, are very effective, and barring a shortage, they are available to the general public. If you are traveling, be sure to get all the recommended vaccines.

Treat Any Illness Immediately

Even if you are very careful, you will probably still get sick. Once you start to feel like you are coming down with something, be sure to get plenty of rest. If you try to ignore an illness, you will only increase the severity of the illness. So use that cough and sore throat as a reason to sleep in, go to bed early, and drink plenty of water and orange juice.
