E-Learning: Firsthand Experience

Pros to taking Online Classes

The ease of taking online classes is its greatest virtue. A student can choose when and for how long to study online. Most courses required reading through modules accompanied by PowerPoint presentations. I could either spend ten minutes on a subject or thirty. I was my own disciplinarian. That’s another thing about E-learning: one must be highly disciplined and motivated.

Another advantage of online classes has to do with the ease of transportability. It doesn’t matter where you’re at as long as you have access to a computer. Thankfully, my clunky desktop computer died most victoriously and painfully. I excitedly purchased a laptop that I take everywhere. With a wireless connection I can easily move around and complete the work required of me.

Future Education

Presently E-learning makes the most sense for those earning advanced degrees from long distance. An example is a soldier serving in Iraq who is taking online classes through the University of North Texas. It makes sense that those incapable of attending college in person due to expense, distance, and work, would choose E-learning. I knew a gentleman who worked full time and took classes from the University of Phoenix. It was simply impractical for him to work and attend college. For people living busy lives with little time to sit in classrooms, this mode of education works best.

Presently a few high schools allow their students to take online courses. For those who are already good students, well disciplined and motivated, there is still a need for parental and instructional guidance. Unfortunately most schools can’t afford to offer online classes.

For businesses who wish their employees to continue their education, E-learning is appropriate for it allows them to apply the information directly to their work. An example would be a computer technician who needs instant information regarding a piece of hardware or software. By tapping into a web site, specially designed for this purpose, the technician can retrieve the information and instantly apply it to the work at hand.
