How to Clean and Maintain Your Furniture

Caring for Wicker Furniture

  • Wicker can be damaged by exposure to excessive sunlight and moisture (ironic, because wicker is one of the most popular materials for garden and patio furniture!).  Prolong the life of your wicker furniture by keeping it in a sheltered area as much as possible when it’s not in use.
  • Wipe your wicker monthly with a cloth that’s been dipped in plain water and wrung well.
  • Clean spills with a mixture of mild soap and water.  Never use abrasive cleaners or undiluted solvents, because they’ll damage the wicker – or, at the very least, harm the finish.
  • To prevent unfinished wicker from yellowing, you can clean it with very salty water.
  • To dust your wicker furniture, use a soft toothbrush or a stiff paintbrush to reach the dirt that’s deep in the weave, then finish the job with a vacuum or whisk broom.
  • To give your wicker a deeper cleaning, mix two tablespoons of ammonia into one gallon of water and wipe the wicker down with a cloth dampened in the solution.  You can use a toothbrush to get the harder-to-reach places.  Rinse with a cloth dampened with plain water, and allow the furniture to air dry.
  • If the weave of your wicker furniture has become loose, soak it thoroughly with a garden hose and let it dry in the sun.  As it dries, it will tighten and shrink back into place.
