How to Survive a Stalking Ex-lover

by C Williams May 26, 2005

Take a self-defense class

A self-defense class will give you confidence, keep you in shape, and teach you how to respond if you are taken by surprise. Courses that teach you how to respond if your attacker has a weapon are best. The class should also teach you how to use your attacker’s size and strength against him/her.

Teach your kids how to react in case of an emergency

People who stalk others are unpredictable. They may “love” you so much that they want to harm you and your children. If they can’t have you and the kids, no one else can. Therefore, your children should know how to dial 911 and how to get a neighbor for help. Give your child a secret word that only you know. Anyone who approaches the child without the secret word could not be trusted. The word can also be used as a signal to alert your child of danger. For example, when she hears you say the word bubblegum, the child should know to immediately run and get help or hide.

Finally, in some cases, you may want to move to a new home. It could be a good idea to start fresh in new surroundings. You can’t run from your stalker, but you can move to an area where he/she is not so close. Keep in mind, though, that a person who is seriously bent on stalking will follow you anywhere. Wherever you are, police should be alerted that you are a victim of stalking.
