If it’s okay with your doctor, work can actually be a pleasant distraction when it’s done from the comfort of your own bed.
For just a few measly dollars, you can purchase a plastic rolling cart (or two!) with drawers that will be invaluable in keeping track of your office supplies. Stock it with the things you’d ordinarily have in your desk: envelopes, extra pens, stapler and paper clips, file folders, etc. It can be pulled right up alongside the bed so it’s easy to reach.
Make sure you’re in a place where the phone is within easy reach. Even if you don’t have a phone jack by your bed, a cordless handset is easy to keep track of. If you’ll be making business calls, make sure that your address book and/or Rolodex – and a regular phone book and yellow pages – are nearby.
There’s never been a better time to invest in a laptop computer. If you don’t have one of your own, perhaps a friend has one you can borrow. Or better yet, ask your employer. Usually he or she will be glad to help out with a loaner, since the work you’ll be doing on it is going to benefit the company in the long run!
Thanks to modern technology, it isn’t necessary to make endless runs to the Post Office to mail every little thing. If you have a printer available, you can print out mailing labels online and the USPS will pick up packages from your home. You don’t even have to go to the Post Office to purchase stamps – just buy them online too!
Speaking of packages – if part of your work involves getting them, you can designate a neighbor to receive them so that you don’t have to get up and down and go to the door. If a signature will be required, ask if the requirement can be waived.
Keep a small wastebasket handy so you won’t be surrounded by a sea of paper wads.
