How to Read Through the Entire Bible

by Kathy Schaeffer June 10, 2005

What Subjects Does the Bible Cover?

The Bible is separated into various sections that cover diverse subjects. There are stories about love and about war and abundant things in between. The forty people who wrote God's words into the form of the Bible came from many walks of life . . . fishermen and farmers, doctors and holy men, even kings. The main divisions include:

  • Books of Law: The first five books of the Bible, namely Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. These books were written by Moses. These first five books are known as the Pentateuch.
  • Next are the Books of History: These books talk about the history of Israel and the history books are Joshua, Judges, Ruth, I and II Samuel, I and II Kings, I and II Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther.
  • The Books of Poetry are beautiful and very useful for daily living. These books include Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon. Many scholars agree that the book of Job is the part of the Bible that was written first, thus the oldest book in the Bible. On the other hand, though, others maintain that the first five books, Genesis to Deuteronomy are actually the oldest.
  • Books of the Major and Minor Prophets are next. The books of Major Prophets are:
  1. Isaiah
  2. Jeremiah
  3. Lamentations
  4. Ezekiel
  5. Daniel
  • The books of Minor Prophets are:
  1. Hosea
  2. Joel
  3.  Amos
  4. Obadiah
  5. Jonah
  6. Micah
  7. Nahum
  8. Habakkuk
  9. Zephaniah
  10. Haggai
  11. Zechariah
  12. Malachi

Those are the books of the Old Testament and their subject divisions. The New Testament starts at the time of the birth of Jesus and covers His teachings. There are many teachings of the Apostle Paul as well.
