Getting Fathers Involved with Newborn

by Valencia P. Higuera June 14, 2005

Avoid Becoming Tyrannical

Mothers should also put forth the effort to be tolerant with fathers. Initially, the father will likely not manage all tasks as well as the mother would. Some women become annoyed or aggravated and resolve to care for the child themselves. On the other hand, being a tyrant and becoming neurotic about the way a father cares for the baby will discourage him. True, men may require some assistance. Nonetheless, the assistance given should be loving and heartfelt. Lecturing or speaking to the father as if he were unintelligent or slow will likely create grounds for him to distance himself from the baby. This may result in the father steering clear of the infant, and the mother caring for the child by herself.

Be Patient

Even though mothers should encourage fathers to be involved with the day to day responsibilities of the newborn, mothers must avoid becoming a nuisance. Some men have a legitimate fear of newborns. They rather not feed the baby or change the baby until it grows a little. This is common. In circumstances like this, mothers could invite the father to sit with her and the baby during feedings and bathing. This is ideal because the father will feel a part of the daily routine. After a few weeks, fathers in general start to feel calm around the newborn, and begin to become more involved.
