Fun Things to Do and See in the Grayland/Westport Area of Washington State

by Mary M. Alward August 25, 2005

The Westport Boardwalk

In the Westport dock area, at the end of Neddie Rose Drive, is a scenic boardwalk and it’s one thing you won’t want to miss. Bring along your camera for magnificent photos of Gray’s Harbor and the boats that come in and out of Westport marina. The boardwalk is a delightful area frequented by both fishermen and sightseers. It’s one of the busiest places in Westport, but a delight to people of all ages.

Clam Digging

Grayland and North Cove are great places to dig for razor clams. They’re delicious and the entire family will have lots of fun digging them. Seasons for razor clams vary, so be sure to check with the Department of Fish and Wildlife before you set out on your clam digging excursion. Heavy fines are implemented if you are caught digging clams out of season.

Charter Fishing

If you love to fish, charter a boat for a day of thrills. Trips include bottom fishing, as well as fishing for tuna, halibut and salmon. If you want a great experience, charter a whale watching tour.

Boogie Boarding

If you’re the adventuresome type or like living on the edge, try boogie boarding in Westport in the area just north of the marina. For those who enjoy a more challenging boogie board experience, ride the big waves near the South Jetty. Be sure to check ocean conditions and weather before heading out to ensure safe and positive boogie boarding fun.

Crab Gear

If you are in Westport in December, be sure to visit the dock area where you will see thousands of Dungeness crab pots. The season starts in December, when your can see the pots; in winter they are out in the ocean collecting crabs. The pots are packed away in spring, where they remain until the following season. You can rent crab pots during the season to try your luck at crab fishing. Bait is available at a variety of places in town and is easy to find. If you’ve never seen crab fishermen preparing for the season, you will be delighted with this experience.

Cranberry Farms

Be sure to drive by or visit the cranberry farms around Grayland. You can drive right up to the bogs and learn so much about this tasty fruit when it’s in season. Cranberries are harvested in September and October each year.
