Allergy-Proofing Your Home

by Jami Cameron June 03, 2005

Dehumidify. Allergy sufferers should keep indoor humidity levels low – between 35 and 40 percent if possible, but never over 50 percent. You can do this by running air conditioning, dehumidification units and HEPA air cleaners. Using these three air treatments can successfully keep humidity levels down while eliminating allergens and other harmful particles from circulating in the air in your home.

Allergy proofing isn’t an easy task, but it can be done – and boy, it’s worth it. Allergy sufferers will note a significant improvement in their allergy symptoms if each allergy prevention/maintenance step is implemented.

To really combat allergens, there are a few other allergy prevention/maintenance tips for your home:

  • Replace heavy carpets with wood, linoleum or tile flooring.

  • Replace overstuffed, ornate furniture with leather or vinyl furniture.

  • Only use washable cotton curtains or blinds for easy cleaning.

  • Wipe all surfaces with a damp or treated cloth.

  • Use mildew resistant shower curtains.

  • Clean air ducts regularly.

  • Wear a face mask when doing house cleaning or yard work.

  • Store clothing and other fabric in dry areas.

  • Seal leaking roof and pipes.

  • Change your air conditioner’s air filter monthly.

  • Add a mold inhibitor to paint before applying to walls.
